Description:

In 1886, a young doctor named Arthur Conan Doyle was struggling to find patients and readers. Inspired by his medical mentor, Dr. Joseph Bell, Doyle began writing a detective story that emphasized logic, deduction, and observation.

He titled it A Study in Scarlet. It was the first appearance of Sherlock Holmes, a cold, calculating detective, and Dr. John Watson, his loyal and curious companion. Together, they solved a gruesome murder that stretched from the streets of London to the deserts of Utah.

The manuscript was rejected by several publishers before being accepted by Ward, Lock & Co. for a mere £25. It was published in Beeton’s Christmas Annual of 1887, a magazine that would later become legendary for introducing Holmes to the world.

Although the book received little attention at first, it quietly launched what would become one of the most influential literary series of all time. Doyle did not just invent a character, he helped define a genre.

Today, A Study in Scarlet is celebrated not only for its mystery but also for giving the world the most famous detective in fiction.
